Why Is My Epson EcoTank Not Printing Black?

When your Epson EcoTank printer fails to print black ink while color printing works fine, the issue is typically caused by a clogged printhead nozzle, air bubbles in the ink tube, or low ink levels in the black tank. EcoTank printers use a tube-based ink delivery system that can occasionally develop air gaps or clogs, especially if the printer has been idle for an extended period.

Step 1: Check Black Ink Levels

Before attempting any troubleshooting, verify that the black ink tank has sufficient ink. While EcoTank tanks hold significantly more ink than cartridges, they do eventually run low. Open the ink tank cover and visually check the black tank level. If the level is below the lower line, refill it with genuine Epson 102 or 112 black ink (depending on your model).

Step 2: Run Printhead Cleaning Cycle

Access the printer maintenance menu through the control panel or Epson software. Select "Printhead Cleaning" or "Nozzle Check" to start the cleaning cycle. This process forces ink through the nozzles to clear any blockages. Run the nozzle check pattern first to see which nozzles are clogged, then run the cleaning cycle. You may need to repeat this 2-3 times for stubborn clogs.

Step 3: Power Ink Flushing

If regular cleaning cycles don't resolve the issue, try a power ink flush (also called power cleaning). This is a more aggressive cleaning that uses significantly more ink but is more effective at clearing stubborn clogs. Access this through the Epson printer software under Maintenance. Note that this process uses a considerable amount of ink, so only use it when standard cleaning fails.

Step 4: Check for Air Bubbles

Air bubbles in the ink delivery tubes can prevent black ink from reaching the printhead. Look at the transparent tubes running from the ink tanks to the printhead. Step 5: Manually Clean the Printhead

Preventing Future Clogs

To prevent black ink clogs in your Epson EcoTank, print a test page at least once a week to keep the ink flowing through the nozzles. Always use genuine Epson ink refills — third-party inks can have different viscosities and chemical compositions that contribute to clogging.
